Halloween in the Capital City, so dreamy. Whether you're taking yourself out, or bringing your ridiculously dressed toddler around the block, here's a quick guide of how to play.
Pre-Halloween Events
All dates vary depending on year.
- Halloween Skate - Every year the Treadwell Arena puts on the annual Costume Skate.
- Haunted House - City of Juneau Fire Training Center.
- Haunted Station - US Coast Guard puts on the annual haunted house, free admission but it is also a food drive for the Alaska Food Bank!
- Zombie Run - An annual 5k and 1 mile fun run, costumes encouraged!
- Halloween Photoshoot - Come dressed up and let the members of the Juneau Photo Group snap a photo.
Take yourself out
If you aren't attending any private parties, your best bet will be to head downtown. In which case, all the bars will be pretty spooky! But you're dressed to kill so pick your poison.
- The Alaskan - Creep upstairs to people watch all the goons below.
- Rendezvous - Laid back, possibly a groovy dance scene.
- The Narrows - Put your best resting bitch face on, and go get a classy cocktail while you judge everyones crappy costumes in your designer one.
- Imperial - If you did Halloween right, no one will recognize you and you can dance your way to hell.
- Viking - Take a spin on the microphone, it's the one time of year you can get away with alllll sorts of things!
- Rockwell - an easy going place with space, food, and a great atmosphere.
Trick or Treating? My favorite neighborhoods are:
- Flats - located near the Federal Building.
- Fox Farm Trail - at the end of Fritz Cove Road.
- Park Place - near Rotary Park, you can hit a ton of homes in a short amount of time.
- Downtown Juneau during their annual daytime trick or treat event where business participate.
- South Douglas - St. Ann's Street.
For your Halloween Costume
I always love a good homemade costume, especially when you can take your regular clothes to another dimension. Here's a great photoshoot we did to showcase how you can take every day outfits and put a little magic into them, give them a new life, and above all, look good with fitted and styled clothes!
For a witchy look
Go with dark colors, pairing purples, oranges, greens, and more black. Layer items to keep yourself warm for when you head outdoors, but also to shed when you warm up. Jewelry, scarves, hats, and boots are all great accessories you can use to glam up your look. For this Witch look we stacked on the jewelry, especially crystals, and stones. Boots are very practical for walking outside and being able to wear socks! And duh, a witch hat!
For hair, we used hair extensions to give more volume, a messy and unkept look. Sydney, who has very dark hair, has blonde extensions in to give a very two-toned witchy-look. Veronica and I wore them to create length and volume. Our makeup was dark, with charcoals, blacks, and purples on the eyes. A dark lip, a deep red is great, you can also use a black lip pencil to blend into the red creating an ombre look. We took an eyeliner pencil to create small tattoos on our face and hands. We also painted our nails with dark tones.
