1. Eaglecrest

With a dirt road paving a quick route to the top of Ptarmigan Chair, this hike makes for a good trainer! Great for those who hike alone, want to get in shape, build skills, endurance and confidence. Once you get to the summit, the island is yours! Explore both the north foot trails and southern routes to different peaks with stunning 360 views. This is my go-to hike as I can get to the top quicker than most mountain peaks in the Juneau area.

  • Distance - 2.4+ miles, Summit at Pitman's Ridge to overlook Stephen's Passage, you can continue either north or south on smaller foot and game trails
  • Approximate Time - 3-4hrs roundtrip
  • Elevation Gain - 1460ft
  • Trailhead Location -  Top of Fish Creek Road, between the main Lodge and caretakers residence
  • Land Owner - City & Borough of Juneau
  • Difficulty - Moderate to Difficult

2. Mount Jumbo

Steep climbs, plank boards, meadows, trees, alpines, wildflowers and the most magical scene at the summit you'll come across! Mountain top ponds make for dreamy dips, muskeg meadows peppered with wildflowers, you'll wish you had brought a tent to stay!

  • Distance - 2.6 miles to summit
  • Approximate Time - 5-9 hours roundtrip
  • Elevation Gain - 3,300ft
  • Trailhead Location - 5th Street on Douglas Island between #319 & #401
  • Land Owner - City & Borough of Juneau & State of Alaska
  • Difficulty - Difficult

3. Mount Juneau

Once you're out of the trees, you're exposed to sunshine views of Downtown Juneau. The best is cresting the top to get a great look of the full length of Gastineau Channel. A abandoned tramway building still stands at the top. And, if you can swing it, is one leg to the Mount Juneau Ridge and Granite Creek Loop trail which will take 10-12hrs and is mostly unmarked. You'll enjoy wildflowers and mountain goats.

  • Distance - 3 miles to summit
  • Approximate Time - 5-7 hours roundtrip
  • Elevation Gain - 3570 ft
  • Trailhead Location - 1 mile from the begginning of Perseverance Trail which is located at the end of Basic Road in Downtown Juneau.
  • Land Owner - State of Alaska
  • Difficulty - Difficult

4. Mount Robert's Peak

A late summer sunsetter! Due to its elevation it can sometimes take a bit longer for the snow to melt all the way off. My favorite thing to do is to take the Mount Robert's Tram up, then begin the hike! This can save 45-60minutes of zig zag tree hiking and lend you more time for boogying up to Gold's Peak and onto Robert's.

  • Distance - 4.5 miles from Basin Road to Robert's Peak, 2.5 miles from top of tramway to Robert's Peak
  • Approximate Time - 4-8 hours roundtrip
  • Elevation Gain - 3800ft
  • Trailhead Location - Basin Road about 100 yards before the Gold Creek Bridge
  • Land Owner - State of Alaska
  • Difficulty - Difficult

5. Boy Scout Beach

A leisurely long stroll out to a gorgeous beach where you're always outnumbered by birds than people. Creamy sand, level, and serene make this a top location.

  • Distance - 3 miles roundtrip
  • Approximate Time - 2-4 hours
  • Elevation Gain - Sea Level
  • Trailhead Location - At the end of Herbert River Road
  • Land Owner - Private and City & Borough of Junea
  • Difficulty - Easy
